All members of the bed bug family feed on the blood of birds or mammals. Bedbugs often come into a home via secondhand articles and furniture. They may also migrate between homes via wires, plumbing, or rain gutters. In addition, since warehouses, trucks and railroad cars may be infested, common bedbugs can infest homes by stowing away on new furniture stores or shipped from these places.

A blood meal is needed before each moult and each session of egg laying. However these creatures are extremely hardy, the nymphs can survive without a blood meal for months while adults, for more than year. Unlike cockroaches that feed on filth, bedbug infestation has little to do with the cleanliness of the rooms. Quiet often-pristine homes and hotels are also homes for bed bugs as they offer plenty of hiding places and may warm blooded animal hosts.
